Santa's Sleigh Hoop Flyer STEM Activity
One of our favorite ways to increase student engagement during the craziness of the holidays is with STEM. To make it easy for teachers to implement STEM during this busy time in the classroom, we have compiled a list of 12 Days of Christmas STEM activities.
Our Day 6 activity is building Santa’s sleigh. Follow these step-by-step instructions to engage your students in this fun, hands-on STEM challenge!
SANTA’S SLEIGH STEM ACTIVITY
Material List (for each group of 3-4 students):
1 sheet of paper (preferably cardstock)
1 piece of tape (12 inches long)
Divide students into groups of 3-4.
Give each group the materials listed above. Students will construct a sleigh for Santa using only the materials provided. Each sleigh must consist of 1 straw with one circle taped at each end. Circles will be made by taping a strip of paper together end to end.
Allow students approximately 10 minutes to plan their design individually and another 10-20 minutes to plan as a team. Students will have 30 minutes to build their sleigh. Fly the sleighs like a paper airplane.
This activity is fun for students to complete during the Christmas season! For more information, in depth teacher instructions, student handouts, a STEM journal, and student planning and reflection pages, view the full resource HERE.
