Christmas Tree STEM Activity
One of our favorite ways to increase student engagement during the craziness of the holidays is with STEM. To make it easy for teachers to implement STEM during this busy time in the classroom, we have compiled a list of 12 Days of Christmas STEM activities.
Our Day 5 activity is building a Christmas Tree out of cups. Follow these step-by-step instructions to engage your students in this fun, hands-on STEM challenge!
CHRISTMAS TREE STEM ACTIVITY
Material List (for each group of 3-4 students):
6 plastic cups
1 rubber band
1 piece of string per group member (approx. 3 feet long)
Divide students into groups of 3-4.
Give each group the materials listed above. In order to successfully complete this challenge students will need to stack all 6 cups in the shape of a Christmas tree (pyramid) without touching them with their hands.
If a group member touches the cups with their hands the group will have to start over. Have students compete against other groups or against the clock. Have groups complete the activity multiple times using a growth mindset to improve their time.
This activity is always a huge hit with students during the Christmas season! For more information, in depth teacher instructions, student handouts, a STEM journal, and student planning and reflection pages, view the full resource HERE.
