Bring your dinosaur theme to life with Dinosaur Magnetic Tile Building STEM Challenge Task Cards!
These hands-on activities encourage students to explore shapes, solve problems, and create prehistoric creatures using reusable magnetic tiles. Add them to STEM centers, morning tubs, math stations, or your makerspace.
Build Dinosaurs and Prehistoric Designs
This resource includes 11 themed building prompts:
Ankylosaurus, Brachiosaurus, Spinosaurus, Stegosaurus, Triceratops, Tyrannosaurus, Pteranodon, a dinosaur bone, dinosaur egg, prehistoric tree, and volcano.
Students choose a card and use magnetic tiles to represent its features. How could triangles become spikes? What shapes could make a long neck? Each prompt gives students a starting point while leaving room for their own ideas.
Try Four Creative Building Challenges
Four additional challenge cards extend the learning:
Build a 3D dinosaur: Create a dinosaur that stands on its own.
Invent a dinosaur: Design a new dinosaur and give it a name.
Create a habitat: Build a prehistoric environment with a volcano, trees, a cave, and other features.
Make a fossil: Use tiles to represent bones, a skull, or a tail.
These challenges encourage students to experiment, test their ideas, and improve their designs. The habitat activity also makes a fun collaborative project!
Add Counting and Graphing
Turn dinosaur building into a hands-on math activity with the included Shape Count and Graph Your Shapes worksheets.
Students count the equilateral triangles, isosceles triangles, right triangles, and squares in their creations, then record their totals and graph the results.
Extend the conversation with questions such as:
Which shape did you use the most?
How many tiles did you use altogether?
How did your shape counts change after rebuilding?
Simple Setup for Classroom Centers
Print the cards, set out magnetic tiles, and give students space to build. Laminate the cards or place them in protective sleeves for repeated use.
The resource includes teacher sample builds, but recommends keeping them out of studentsโ view so their own creativity can guide the process. Use the cards for small groups, early finishers, morning work, or a dinosaur-themed STEM lesson.
Encourage Testing and Trying Again
When a dinosaur falls over, invite students to figure out why.
Ask, โWhich part needs more support?โ or โWhat could you change to help it stand?โ
Give students time to redesign and share their discoveries. These moments help turn a building activity into meaningful practice with persistence and problem-solving.
