Spring is a wonderful time to build early math skills—especially when counting practice feels like play. With baby ducks waddling to the pond and speckled frogs hopping onto a log, preschoolers stay engaged while working on big foundational concepts like one-to-one correspondence, number recognition, and simple adding.
The two spring-themed lesson plans below pair familiar songs with hands-on activities to make counting to 10 fun, active, and easy to use in your classroom or at home.
Lesson Plan 1: Five Little Ducks Pond Counting Activities (1–10)
Build early math confidence with these Five Little Ducks preschool counting activities.
This playful Pre-K counting lesson helps little learners practice rote counting and writing numbers 1–10 using hands-on duck manipulatives and simple recording pages.
In this lesson, students use pond counting cards with empty circles and small plastic ducks to practice one-to-one correspondence and counting to 10.
After reading or singing Five Little Ducks, children place one duck in each circle, touch and count each duck aloud, and then write the matching numeral for how many ducks are in the pond. The cards can be rotated for lots of repeated practice with different quantities from 1–10.
There’s also an optional movement break (song video) and a fine-motor dot-to-dot extension (two levels) for students who are ready to keep going.
Lesson Plan 2: Five Speckled Frogs Counting Activities
Turn a favorite song into hands-on math with these Five Speckled Frogs Pre-K counting and adding activities.
This playful frog math lesson for preschool and Pre-K uses plastic frog hoppers, a pond-and-log mat, and simple recording pages to build rote counting, simple addition, and fine motor skills. This lesson turns counting into an active game! After reading or singing Five Speckled Frogs, students use frog hoppers and a printable log/pond to “help” the frogs get back onto the log. Kids take turns launching one frog at a time, working to land all five frogs safely on the log—great for counting, turn-taking, and coordination.
Spring bonus: Add a movement break with the frog song video, then extend learning with an addition page where students “add the frogs” for early math enrichment.
Spring counting doesn’t have to be worksheets and flashcards—these duck and frog lessons make numbers feel real, playful, and memorable.
With simple props, familiar songs, and hands-on practice, preschoolers get repeated opportunities to count with one-to-one correspondence, recognize numbers, and even explore early adding—without losing the joy of learning. Pick one activity for a quick math center, or use both across the week for a fun spring-themed counting routine that keeps kids engaged and growing their confidence with numbers.
