Alphabet practice does not have to begin and end with pencils and paper. With an alphabet tangram puzzles, students can explore letters while practicing geometry, fine-motor skills, and problem-solving.
A tangram is a traditional Chinese puzzle consisting of seven geometric pieces: five triangles, one square, and one parallelogram. These pieces can be rotated, flipped, and rearranged to create different pictures and designs. Our Tangram Activities all include printable Tangram templates for you to print your own set of tangrams.
During this lesson, students use tangram pieces to construct uppercase letters. Each challenge card provides a model for students to study and recreate. Once they become comfortable with the pieces, students can design letters in new ways.
Why Use Tangrams to Build Letters?
This activity helps students develop several important skills:
Letter recognition and formation
Shape identification and composition
Spatial reasoning
Fine-motor control
Problem-solving and perseverance
Communication and collaboration
The challenge also introduces students to the Engineering Design Process. They create a design, test it, make changes, and try again. Students learn that an unsuccessful attempt is not a failure—it is information they can use to improve their work.
How to Teach the Lesson
Begin by giving each student or pair a complete seven-piece tangram set and an alphabet challenge card.
Before students start building, ask them to examine the model. What shapes do they notice? Which pieces might be easiest to place first? Will any pieces need to be rotated or flipped?
Allow students time to explore without immediately correcting their designs. If they become stuck, ask questions such as:
What have you already tried?
Which piece could you rotate?
What is different between your design and the model?
What change could you make?
Finish with a quick gallery walk or partner discussion. Invite students to share what was challenging, which strategy helped, and how they improved their designs.
Ways to Differentiate
Younger students can build beside the model, work with a partner, or begin with visually distinct letters such as A, T, and V.
Students who are ready for an additional challenge can:
Build a letter differently from the example.
Create a lowercase letter.
Use only triangle pieces.
Build a letter with a line of symmetry.
Design their own challenge card.
Students can also build an animal and identify the letter its name begins with or combine completed letters to create a class alphabet display.
Productive Struggle Is Success
A successful STEM challenge does not require every student to complete a perfect build. Success might look like rotating a piece several times, testing a partner’s idea, or deciding to try a new approach.
These moments help students develop resilience, flexible thinking, and confidence. With the Alphabet Tangram Engineering Challenge Cards, students can build letters while learning that good designs often take more than one try.
