9 Fairy Tale STEM Activities for Kids

Fairy tales are packed with problems to solve—creaky bridges, wobbly towers, and characters who definitely need better engineering. Here are nine classroom-ready Fairy Tale STEM lessons that blend literacy with hands-on design, testing, and improving.

1) The Three Little Pigs - Wolf Trap STEM Activity

Get all nine of these fairy tale STEM lessons as part of the STEM Teachers Club.

In this challenge, students become engineers hired to outsmart the Big Bad Wolf by designing and building a trap that can actually catch him—whether it drops from above, closes around him, or uses a clever “gotcha” entrance. The focus is on planning first, building with intention, testing, and then improving like real engineers when the first prototype doesn’t work.

2) Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs STEM Activity

Snow White finds the dwarfs’ cottage… but there’s a problem: no table big enough for Snow White, seven dwarfs, and dinner plates. Students design and build a table that meets size/space requirements, then test it to see if it truly “fits” all the characters and their plates—perfect for introducing constraints and real-world design needs.

3) Goldilocks and the Three Bears STEM Activity

This lesson turns Goldilocks into a materials science lab: students explore different items by touch and classify them as soft or hard, then place picture cards into the correct category on a recording sheet. It’s an easy, high-engagement way to build observation skills, vocabulary, and early data sorting—plus it naturally leads to great discussions about what would be “just right.”

4) The Three Little Pigs STEM Centers

Students rotate through hands-on tasks that keep them actively working—planning, designing, building, testing, and improving—while you differentiate support by center and student need. It’s an easy way to sprinkle meaningful STEM practice into your literacy block, because every station ties back to the story and gives kids a clear purpose for their choices (and a reason to try again when something doesn’t work the first time).

5) The Ugly Duckling STEM Activity

In this science-meets-engineering lesson, students design a device that helps a duckling float—then test it using water. It’s a great setup for talking about buoyancy, materials, and redesign (because water testing makes the results obvious and fast).

6) The Three Billy Goats Gruff STEM Activity

Students take on the classic problem of getting the goats safely across the river by engineering a bridge the three billy goats can travel over. This is a strong intro to structure and stability, and it naturally encourages iteration as students test what holds, what collapses, and what needs reinforcement.

7) Cinderella STEM Activity

When Cinderella’s carriage turns back into a pumpkin at midnight, students step in to engineer a new carriage. The challenge includes time for planning and building, followed by testing and improving—making it a clear, kid-friendly engineering design process lesson.

8) Jack and the Beanstalk STEM Activity

Students design and construct a beanstalk strong enough to support a castle “in the clouds.” It’s a fun way to explore stability, weight, balance, and design choices, especially when students test and revise to keep their castle standing.

9) Rapunzel STEM Activity

In this challenge, students design a way to help Princess Rapunzel safely escape the tower—an open-ended engineering problem that can lead to ramps, pulleys, ladders, zip-lines, or totally original solutions. It’s perfect for creativity, teamwork, and practicing the Ask / Imagine / Plan phase before building.
