Winter STEM Centers and Activities for Kids
Winter is the perfect time to ignite creativity and problem-solving skills in your classroom with engaging STEM centers!
These winter-themed activities are designed to captivate students and help them develop essential STEM skills while having fun. Whether you're looking for activities to fill your classroom with excitement during the colder months or ideas to align with your curriculum, these Winter STEM Centers have you covered.
Why Winter STEM Centers?
STEM centers provide a unique opportunity for students to explore various challenges in a hands-on and collaborative environment. With winter-themed activities, students are not only learning but also connecting with seasonal elements they love. Here’s why they work:
Encourage Teamwork: Students learn to collaborate and problem-solve together.
Promote Critical Thinking: Each center challenges students to think outside the box.
Offer Flexibility: Students can work independently, in pairs, or in small groups.
Short and Engaging: Each activity is designed to hold students' attention while building valuable skills.
How to Use Winter STEM Centers
Winter STEM Centers can be set up in two ways:
Whole Class STEM Challenges: Engage your entire class in one activity at a time.
Rotation Model: Set up multiple centers and have students rotate through them. For rotations, we recommend setting a timer for 10-15 minutes per station.
Pro Tip: Use a digital timer to help students stay on track and establish clear expectations for cleanup and transitions.

Here’s an overview of the exciting centers included in this resource:
1.) Mitten Match-Up
At this center, students will match pairs of mittens with unique patterns and designs. They will practice their visual discrimination and attention to detail as they search for the perfect pairs.
Materials: printable matching cards
2.) Snow Scooper
Students will design and build a functional snow scooper using only paper and tape. They will test their creations by transferring "snow" (cotton balls or rice) into cups, learning about the importance of structure and function in their designs.
Materials: paper, scissors, tape, tray, cups, and fake snow (e.g., rice or cotton balls).
3.) Mystery Winter Scene
Students will solve math problems to unlock sections of a mystery winter-themed picture. As they complete each problem, they will color the corresponding sections to reveal a hidden image.
Materials: printable math pages, colored pencils, crayons, markers, pencils
4.) Snowman Secrets
Students will follow step-by-step clues to design and assemble their own snowman. This activity challenges them to interpret instructions and apply creative thinking to bring their snowman to life.
Materials: printable snowman pages, scissors, glue, and a glyph page
5.) Penguin Polar Slide
Using a magnetic wand, students will guide a paper penguin through an icy obstacle course. They will try to collect fish while avoiding icebergs, applying their understanding of magnetism and motion.
Materials: magnetic wand, paper plate, penguin printable, paperclips, glue, and tape
6.) Super Sled Slide
Students will construct sleds using various materials and test them on a slanted surface. They will experiment with different designs to see which sled slides the farthest, exploring principles of friction and aerodynamics.
Materials: cardstock, popsicle sticks, scissors, tape, pipe cleaners, paperclips, and a slanted surface
7.) Snowball LaunchER
Students will build a catapult to launch snowballs (cotton balls) at designated targets. They will experiment with their designs to improve accuracy and distance, incorporating principles of force and motion.
Materials: cotton balls or pom poms, rubber bands, popsicle sticks, a plastic spoon, and printable target cards
8.) Football Blast-Off
At this center, students will use straws to propel paper footballs across a designated field. They will test different angles and levels of force to achieve the greatest distance, exploring concepts of trajectory and air resistance.
Materials: paper, tape, football printable, straws, and a football field setup
9.) HIBERNATE AND CREATE
Students will design and construct winter habitats for animals using makerspace materials. They will think critically about the needs of different animals and use creativity to build functional and cozy shelters.
Materials: makerspace building materials, animal cutouts, and binder clips
10.) ICE FISHING FUN
Students will construct a fishing pole and "catch" paper fish that have math problems written on them. After catching a fish, they will solve the problem to earn points, combining engineering and math skills.
Materials: string, tape, pipe cleaners, popsicle sticks, weights, printable fish facts, and binder clips
Winter STEM Centers are a wonderful way to engage your students during the colder months while developing their STEM skills. Let their creativity shine as they explore these exciting challenges!
