Creativity Hall of Fame: A Fun and Engaging Way to Inspire Creative Thinking in the Classroom
Creativity is a crucial skill in today’s world, especially in STEM fields where problem-solving and innovative thinking are essential. However, research suggests that creative thinking declines with age. As educators, we must actively nurture creativity in our students to help them develop the skills they’ll need for the future. One of the best ways to do this is through creativity challenges, and that’s where the Creativity Hall of Fame resource comes in!
What are Creativity and Finish the Picture Challenges?
Creativity challenges are activities designed to help students think in new and unique ways. One of the best types of creativity challenges is the Finish the Picture Challenge, where students are given a simple drawing and must transform it into something entirely different—while following a specific constraint. For example, if given part of a heart shape, they must turn it into anything except a heart! These challenges encourage students to think beyond the obvious and generate original ideas, helping them develop their divergent thinking skills.
What Is the Creativity Hall of Fame?
The Creativity Hall of Fame is a fun and structured way to engage students in creative thinking exercises throughout the school year. Each month, students participate in a "Finish the Picture" challenge, where they are given a simple prompt and must transform it into something completely different. The catch? They can’t turn it into the obvious answer!
For example:
January: "It’s NOT a sled!"
April: "It’s NOT a baseball bat!"
October: "It’s NOT a candy!"
Students use their imagination to create something new and unique, pushing their divergent thinking skills to the next level.
Why Creativity Challenges Matter
Creativity challenges are short (3-10 minutes) but highly effective. They:
✔ Encourage students to think outside the box
✔ Strengthen problem-solving skills
✔ Boost confidence in their ideas
✔ Foster a growth mindset
✔ Help students exercise their “creative muscles”
These challenges work perfectly as morning work, brain breaks, STEM warm-ups, or early finisher activities.
How the Monthly Creativity Challenge Works
Introduce the Challenge: At the beginning of each month, share the new "Finish the Picture" prompt with your students.
Set a Deadline: Students have until a designated date (e.g., the 25th) to submit their completed designs.
Encourage Participation: Create categories for different grade levels and even staff members to get the whole school involved.
Judge the Entries: Select winners based on creativity, effort, and presentation.
Showcase the Winners: Display the best entries in a Creativity Hall of Fame to celebrate student innovation and inspire others.
Creating a Culture of Creativity
By implementing the Creativity Hall of Fame in your classroom, you’re not just doing a fun activity—you’re building a culture where creativity is valued and celebrated. When students see their ideas recognized, they become more confident in their ability to think creatively.
Plus, the monthly structure makes it easy to maintain excitement and engagement all year long!
