Snowman Read Alouds and STEM Challenges
Connecting STEM to a read aloud is a great way to set up the problem for students to solve. It is also a great way to engage students in reading and writing by making it hands-on.
The following are our top 4 snowman read alouds and STEM challenges!
1.) Snowmen at Night
Snowmen at Night by Caralyn Buehner is a fictional story about what snowmen might do if they came alive at night. The snowmen compete in the snowman games which involves races, ice skating, baseball, a snowball fight, and sledding.
After reading the book, challenge your students to design the fastest snowman sled for the competition.
2.) How to Catch a Snowman
How to Catch a Snowman by Adam Wallace, tells the story of a snowman that comes to life. The children design traps to try and catch the snowman. Unfortunately, none of their traps are successful.
Challenge your students to build a trap to catch the snowman.
3.) Snowmen All Year
Snowmen All Year by Caralyn Buehner, is about a boy who wishes his snowman would last all year. He dreams about all of the things he would do with his snowman if he could be around for all four seasons.
After reading the book, teach students about freezing point, melting point, and insulation. Then, have students complete a science experiment to see which materials are the best at insulating an ice cube to keep it from melting.
4.) Snowmen At Work
The story Snowmen at Work by Caralyn Buehner, is about what snowmen would do if they had jobs. Some of the snowmen jobs include dentists, mechanics, teachers, bakers, and snow shovelers
Challenge your students to design a shovel for a snowman that can scoop the most snow.
