Snowflake Bentley STEM Activity (Build a Snowflake)
Getting kids to focus during the winter months was always a struggle for me. The cold temperatures made it impossible to go outside, leaving kids with no way to burn off energy. Times like these require extremely engaging lessons to keep students focused and engaged.
Fortunately, I found the secret to keeping students engaged, even during the long winter months…STEM! You too can increase student engagement during the long winter months with a STEM activity like building a snowflake using the read-aloud Snowflake Bentley.
SNOWFLAKE BENTLEY STEM ACTIVITY
20 large marshmallows
30 small marshmallows
Divide students into groups of 3-4.
Begin the activity by reading Snowflake Bentley by Jacqueline Briggs Martin. After reading, explain to students that their challenge is to create as many unique snowflake designs as possible using only toothpicks and marshmallows.
Allow students time to plan out their designs individually and as a team. Give students approximately 30 minutes to create as many different snowflake structures with toothpicks and marshmallows as possible.
Snowflake designs should be realistic and should include aspects of real snowflakes such as having 6 sides. At the end of the activity, be sure to have students reflect on their creations and share their favorite designs.
This activity is always a huge hit with students during the winter months! For more information, in depth teacher instructions, student handouts, a STEM journal, and student planning and reflection pages, view the full resource HERE.
