4th of July Air-Powered Fireworks STEM Challenge
Looking for a fun summer STEM activity that is easy to prep and exciting for kids to test again and again?
This Air-Powered Fireworks STEM Challenge is a great way to bring a 4th of July theme into your classroom, summer camp, or at-home learning. After reading Fireworks by Matthew Burgess, students design and build their own firework rocket that launches through the air using a straw and the force of their breath. It’s perfect for celebrating America’s 250th birthday!
It is a STEM challenge that is simple, hands-on, and full of meaningful science and engineering learning.

We love connecting STEM to a great picture book, and this challenge works especially well with Fireworks by Matthew Burgess. The story is full of light, color, and wonder, which makes it the perfect introduction to this activity. After reading, students take on the role of engineers and design their own air-powered firework rocket.
If you do not have the book, the challenge can still stand alone, but the read aloud helps make the lesson even more memorable.
The Fireworks STEM Challenge
In this challenge, students must design a firework rocket that launches through the air using air from a straw. They plan their idea, build their rocket, test how far it travels, and improve their design. As they work, students explore force, air pressure, gravity, and trajectory in a fun and age-appropriate way.
Suggested Materials
1 firework printable
tape
1 straw
1 piece of construction paper or copy paper
scissors
yardstick
crayons, markers, or colored pencils
These simple materials make this challenge easy to use with individuals, partners, or small groups.
How It Works
Students cut a strip of paper so it fits around the outside of the straw. Then they tape it into a tube and attach the firework printable to the outside. The key to this challenge is sealing the top of the rocket with tape. That allows air pressure to build inside the rocket when students blow into the straw. Once students figure that out, they can launch and test their design.
This creates a great opportunity for problem-solving because students may need to revise their rocket before it launches successfully.
Testing and Data Collection
Set up a testing area with a launch line and have students stand behind it as they launch their rockets forward. After each launch, students measure how far the rocket traveled and record their results. This resource also includes a graphing page, which makes it easy to add a math connection to the lesson.
This testing process gives students a clear reason to redesign and improve their rockets.
Science Connections
This challenge gives students a hands-on way to explore important science ideas. When students blow into the straw, they create a force, or push, that moves the rocket. The rocket travels through the air, then gravity pulls it back down. As it moves, it follows a curved path called a trajectory. The lesson also helps students discover that a tightly sealed top creates more air pressure, which can lead to a stronger launch.
Easy Extension Idea
A fun extension from this lesson is to test different launch angles:
straight up
at a slight angle
horizontally
Ask:
Which angle made the rocket go the highest?
Which angle made it travel the farthest?
This is a simple way to extend the challenge and encourage students to compare results.
