Yes, You CAN Teach Growth Mindset in October!

Growth Mindset is a huge trend in teaching, but I get it, it’s hard to add one more thing to your instruction. However, you CAN integrate growth mindset in your classroom.

Teaching growth mindset is a best practice. Research has proven its many benefits. Teaching and learning growth mindset is a process. This process may not be easy, but it is definitely worth it for our students!

The following are 3 simple and easy ways to make growth mindset instruction work during the month of October!

October STEM Read Alouds

Read-alouds are one of the best ways to introduce new concepts to students. By integrating stories in lessons, students are introduced to quality books. When students are exposed to engaging literature, it fosters a life-long love of reading.

There are even greater benefits when these engaging read-alouds are connected to a STEM activity! STEM promotes 21st century skills all while allowing students to connect their learning to science, technology, engineering, and mathematical principles. This creates learning opportunities that are rigorous while maintaining a high level of student engagement.

The following are our top 5 STEM read-alouds and activities for October.

Growth Mindset Read Alouds

Have you ever heard any of these comments from you students?

"I'm just not good at math"

"I'll never be good at reading."

This type of thinking emerges from a fixed mindset. A fixed mindset is the belief that our intelligence, abilities, and talents are fixed traits that are out of our control.

On the other hand, a growth mindset is the belief that through hard work and perseverance our intelligence, abilities, and talents can be developed.

Celebrate International Dot Day with STEM

International Dot Day is celebrated on September 15th. It is a day meant to encourage students to be creative, curious, and brave. The inspiration for the day comes for the book, The Dot, by Peter H. Reynolds.

The story of The Dot centers around the main character, Vashti, who doesn't believe she is a good artist. However, after some encouragement from her teacher, Vashti begins drawing dots. At the end of the story, Vashti learns to be brave and use her creativity to make her mark on the world.
