Build a Snowman STEM Activity

One of our favorite ways to increase student engagement during the craziness of the holidays is with STEM. To make it easy for teachers to implement STEM during this busy time in the classroom, we have compiled a list of 12 Days of Christmas STEM activities.

Our Day 10 activity is build a snowman. Follow these step-by-step instructions to engage your students in this fun, hands-on STEM challenge!

BUILD A SNOWMAN STEM ACTIVITY

Material List (for each group of 3-4 students):

  • 30 toothpicks

  • small marshmallows (approx. 10-20)

  • large marshmallows (approx. 20-30)

  • rulers

Divide students into groups of 3-4.

Give each group the materials listed above. Challenge students to use the materials to build the tallest snowman that can stand on its own.

Allow students approximately 10 minutes to plan their design individually and another 10-20 minutes to plan as a team. Students will have 30 minutes to build their snowmen. At the end of the time limit measure the snowmen to see which one is the tallest.

Engage students in STEM with this fun winter challenge! For more information, in depth teacher instructions, student handouts, a STEM journal, and student planning and reflection pages, view the full resource HERE.
