Wood Plank STEM Activities: 23 Building Challenges for Your Classroom
Looking for an easy way to turn a bin of wood planks into meaningful STEM learning? Our Wood Plank STEM Task Cards give students a starting point for building, testing, and improving their own creations.
These print-and-play challenges work with wood planks or KEVA Planks and fit into STEM centers, makerspaces, morning work, indoor recess, and sub plans. With reusable materials and open-ended prompts, you can use them throughout the school year!
Simple Materials, So Many Possibilities
Wood planks give students room to experiment. A small change in placement can make a structure taller, stronger, or more stable—and a collapsed design gives students a reason to try something new.
Our task cards invite students to connect their building to familiar structures. Challenges include creating a house, building a staircase, designing a playground, and constructing a bridge.
Each prompt leaves space for different solutions. Students can work toward the same goal while creating something completely their own.

Build, Test, and Try Again
One of our favorite ways to use building challenges is to give students time to explore before offering suggestions. Let them discover what happens when they change the base, turn a plank, or add another layer.
The resource includes challenge prompts that encourage students to take their thinking further:
Can you make your structure taller?
Can you use fewer planks to create a similar structure?
How strong is your structure? How much weight can it hold?
Can a friend copy what you made?
These questions help keep the learning going after the first build. Students practice observing, comparing, explaining, and redesigning as they work.

Bring Math into Building Time
Wood plank challenges also create opportunities for math conversations.
Invite students to count the planks in their designs, compare the heights of two structures, or look for shapes and repeating patterns. Ask partners to explain how they arranged their pieces and what they changed to improve stability.
For an additional challenge, have students rebuild a design using fewer planks. What can they remove? Which pieces need to stay? Their explanations can reveal just as much thinking as the finished structure!
Easy Ways to Use the Task Cards
STEM centers and makerspaces: Set out a few cards with a bin of planks. Let students choose a challenge and share their designs before cleanup.
Morning work: Offer a building prompt that students can explore as they arrive.
Indoor recess: Give students a creative building option they can revisit with new ideas.
STEM sub plans: Keep the cards, teacher instructions, and materials together so they are ready when you need them.
Family STEM night: Invite families to build together, compare solutions, and try a redesign.
