Celebrate Pumpkin Day with STEM

Do you celebrate pumpkin day in the classroom?

Fall is the perfect time to engage students in learning experiences centered around pumpkins. Maximize student learning and engagement by integrating these lessons across subjects with STEM and literacy!

The following are 6 of our favorite pumpkin STEM activities for the fall.

The first pumpkin activity is a Pumpkin Seed STEM challenge. For this activity students make a prediction about how many seeds are in a pumpkin. Next, students sort the class predictions into odd and even numbers. Finally, students complete a pumpkin investigation where they make predictions and measure the pumpkin. See more about this activity HERE.

Integrate art and growth mindset with this next activity, Pumpkin Directed Drawing Growth Mindset STEAM. For this challenge students practice drawing a pumpkin multiple times while focusing on reflecting and improving with each new drawing. See more about this activity HERE.

The Pumpkin Stand STEM activity is always a student favorite! For this activity students design a stand that can support a mini pumpkin using only straws and tape. See more about this activity HERE.

Can you design a catapult to launch a candy pumpkin the farthest distance? This is the question students investigate for this next challenge, Pumpkin Candy Catapult STEM. Students design their catapult using popsicle sticks, a plastic spoon, and rubber bands. See more about this activity HERE.

Students get creative with this next challenge, 3D Shape Pumpkin Builder STEAM. For this activity students design and decorate a 3D pumpkin. Students also record facts about their pumpkin including the number of faces, edges, and vertices. Extend the lesson by having students write a fictional story about their pumpkin. See more about this activity HERE.

Integrate growth mindset and STEM with this last pumpkin challenge, Build a Pumpkin Candy Container STEM. For this challenge students use a piece of paper and tape to build a container that will hold the most candy pumpkins. Students complete this activity twice and use a growth mindset to reflect and improve on their design. See more about this activity HERE.
